Serotonin

The other day I was reading on serotonin (hormone). The lack of serotonin seems to cause depression, on the one hand. On the other hand, it can make you feel needy and fall in love way too easily, that is, to fall for anyone or anything that comes your way, even if they prove to be totally wrong or unhealthy for you. Since we all here tend to fall too quickly for muscle, I was wondering if we may lack serotonin in any way. No, this is not laughable matter and I don't mean to sound like a damper. I am serious. Does this make any sense to any of you? Could our lust for muscle be at worst a lack of serotonin in our bodies? I am not saying we should stop enjoying muscle (I think I will never stop), but maybe we tend to over-react at times. I know I do...

The story is somewhat more complicated than that. I did a presentation last year at a major teaching hospital on "serotonin syndrome", a rare but potentially fatal syndrome which can happen when two or more serotonin enhancing medications are taken together. You are right in saying serotonin is a principle hormone involved in mood, but it also regulates sleep, body temperature, appetite, blood clotting as well as a myriad of other functions. I tend to believe my attraction to muscle is not unlike any other personal fetish. Some guys goes crazy over big tits, others over backsides, some go for body hair or piercings, some even go for feet. I go for big, well defined, well developed male muscle. Granted, there may be a biochemical explanation for this attraction, but it is likely to be much more complex than a lack of a single hormone.
